Amouage Unveils Two Potent Creations for Perfume Connoisseurs

Renaud Salmon, Amouage’s Chief Creative Officer, found the muse for these two new fragrances atop Jabel Shams, Oman’s highest peak. Rising more than 3,000 meters above sea level, this dramatic location – often referred to as “the mountain of the sun” – is unique in its blend of tranquil majesty and rugged wilderness. According to Salmon, the summit offers far more than a breathtaking view; it evokes a shift in perspective that merges one’s sense of self with the sublimity of nature.

While traversing the mountain’s slopes, Salmon encountered twisted juniper trees, some fossilized by lightning strikes that hardened their sap into wooden sculptures over time. In local lore, these junipers are regarded with awe, sometimes even burned at home in the manned of frankincense. Thick clouds moving in and out of the rugged terrain created a sensation of floating between earth and sky, a moment that Salmon felt could only be expressed through the medium of fine fragrance. On his return journey from Jebel Shams, he emerged with a certainty that these impressions would take shape as perfume.

Decision: A Bolt of Lightning

Working alongside acclaimed perfumer Quentin Bisch, Salmon translated his mountain reverie into Decision, a fragrance that represents clarity breaking through uncertainty. Its composition weaves together bergamot and juniper berries with Omani frankincense and myrrh, evoking the cold, woody essence of juniper branches struck by lightning. A crips, citrusy lift emerges early on, blacked by a heart of Atlas cedarwood before settling into a comforting base of warm vanilla. Decision is simultaneously cool and grounding – much like lightning bolt that illuminates the night sky with relentless brilliance.

Existence: A Soft, Hazy Dream

In contrast to the electrifying presence of Decision, Existence embodies the ethereal calm that follows a heightened rush of adrenaline. The fragrance opens with lily of the valley, a note that conveys delicate beauty, then gently reveals whispers of frankincense. Aldehydes and rose blend seamlessly to evoke a mild, dreamlike haze, while resinous benzoin adds an earthy, enveloping warmth. Existence suggests a boundless horizon, echoing Salmon’s sensation of hovering between the rugged ground of Jabel Shams and the clouds that drift above it.

Completing the Odyssey

Decision and Existence round out Amouage’s esteemed Odyssey collection, a series that began in 2020 with Meanders, Ashore, Crimson Rocks, and Enclave, then continued with Boundless and Material in 2021, and more recently with Lineage, Search, Guidance, and Purpose in 2023.
